Welcome to Patient Safety in Correctional Settings

In response to the need to address quality of healthcare in prisons and jails, a group of U.S. correctional health care experts came together at John Jay College in 2009 to develop a set of 60 correctional patient safety standards.

To our knowledge, this is the first published set of standards focusing on patient safety, drawn from the emerging literature on quality improvement in the community, but adapted to prison.

We hope this website will provide:

  • An avenue for dissemination of the proposed standards
  • An opportunity for the public to provide feedback to the developers regarding these standards
  • An opportunity for correctional health care administrators to view these standards and consider their adoption – even in part – in their own systems
  • A stimulus for further discussion about and attention to patient safety behind bars.
